• You must use at least 2 outside sources to support your thesis.
• You must use examples from the texts we have read in class and the outside sources. Papers that do not quote outside sources or the text will not pass.
• Follow MLA guidelines we have discussed all semester (Everything from heading to block quotes to number the pages..everything).
• Works Cited Page

• Never end a paragraph with a quote.
• Cite outside sources within in your text; if it appears on your works cited page it has to be used in the paper (direct quotes or paraphrasing).
• Always keep in mind: is this quote proving and supporting my thesis? If not, do not use it!

 

Pick one of the following topics and be sure to use TWO RELIEABLE OUTSIDE SOURCES!

The Road

1) One man they meet on the road says "There is no God and we are his prophets." What does he mean by this? Explain the role of God and faith in The Road. As always, use direct references to the text as your proof.

2) Describe the relationship between the boy and his father.  What do they feel for each other? How do they maintain their affection for and faith in each other in such brutal conditions? How do they support each other during the tougher times of the novel?

3) What does The Road ultimately suggest about good and evil? What separates the “good guys” from the “bad guys”? How do we as readers know this?

4) Use the idea that the boy is symbolic of a religious figure or “the one” and explain how his role changes over the course of the novel.

The Catcher in the Rye

 

1)      Holden Caufield wants a relationship and he likes girls, but at times he is not exactly the most sensitive kind of guy. Based on Caufield’s actions, statements and other evidence that you gather, argue for an interpretation of Catcher in the Rye as a sexist novel. Why does he treat girls and women the way he does? Remember that he thinks no one is better than his sister but otherwise he does not have a good relationship with women or girls.

2)      One of the central ideas of this novel is Holden Caufield’s curious, conflicted relationship with adolescence and adulthood. Standing on the threshold between the two, Caulfield negotiates neither successfully. Identify the points at which Holden’s ability to navigate adolescence successfully began to break down. Identify what Caulfield could have done to achieve a more successful resolution of this complicated developmental period.

3)      Holden often refers to people as “phonies.” What would you say he means by this? What types of people does he call “phonies”? Does he act in a phony manner at all? If so, how? Give examples to back up your beliefs.

4)      Do a case study on the character of Holden Caulfield. Explain what you believe he is going through or may suffer from by using psychological outside sources. Using theories from psychology, especially those related to mental illness, pretend that you are a psychologist or psychiatrist and use the textual evidence to determine whether Caufield could be diagnosed with a mental illness.

 

 Their Eyes Were Watching God

 

1)      After years of polite submission to her male counterparts, Janie gains her voice in Chapters 7 and 8. Prior to her defiance of Joe, Janie observes the way Daisy, Mrs. Bogle, and Mrs. Robbins are treated by the men. For this essay describe how each woman is treated in the novel.

2)      What happens to Janie after “she tore off [her] kerchief... and let down her plentiful hair” (Chapter 8)? How does her hair reflect her womanhood? How does she change when we see her take off the kerchief?

3)      Janie finds herself in two marriages with men that greatly differ from each other. These two men go by the names of Joe Starks and Vergile “Tea Cake” Woods. They both have very different impacts on Janie’s path to achieve her life goals. Compare and contrast the two characters.

4)      The hurricane makes the characters question who they are and what their place in the universe is. How would you explain this idea?

5)      How has Nanny’s experience as a slave stamped her worldview with a strong concern for financial security, respectability, and upward mobility? What is she most concerned about when it comes to Janie?

A Lesson Before Dying

1)      Education is very important in this novel, both its attainment and the lack of it. Tante Lou continually refers to Grant as “the teacher.” The other men call him “Professor.” Yet Grant hates teaching, echoing the feelings of his own teacher, Matthew Antoine. Contrast the opinions of education presented in this novel. Why do some seek it and others consider it a burden? What role does it play in the characters’ lives and the life of the community?

2)      Reread the description of Vivian from Chapter 4 and the passage in Chapter 15 about Vivian’s marriage. What was the cause of conflict between Vivian and her family over her marriage? What causes the conflict between Vivian and Tante Lou over her relationship with Grant?

3)      Paul earns Grant’s respect through his treatment of Jefferson and his visitors. How is Paul different from the other jail keepers? How do his actions at the end of Jefferson’s life demonstrate Paul’s goodness? Why might he have chosen to attend the execution even though it was not part of his job/

4)      Symbolism is important in this story as it is in many stories. Pick two or three symbols from the novel and explain the role it plays and its significance. Defend your thesis with outside sources and examples from the text.

5)      Compare Rev. Ambrose and Grant’s approach to helping Jefferson. What did they disagree about? How did each man defend his beliefs? Defend your thesis with outside sources and examples from the text.
