· Cite outside sources within in your text; if it appears on your works cited page it has to be used in the paper (direct quotes or paraphrasing).

· Always keep in mind: is this quote proving and supporting my thesis? If not, do not use it!

The Catcher in the Rye

1) Holden Caufield wants a relationship and he likes girls, but at times he is not exactly the most sensitive kind of guy. Based on Caufield’s actions, statements and other evidence that you gather, argue for an interpretation of Catcher in the Rye as a sexist novel. Why does he treat girls and women the way he does? Remember that he thinks no one is better than his sister but otherwise he does not have a good relationship with women or girls.

2) One of the central ideas of this novel is Holden Caufield’s curious, conflicted relationship with adolescence and adulthood. Standing on the threshold between the two, Caulfield negotiates neither successfully. Identify the points at which Holden’s ability to navigate adolescence successfully began to break down. Identify what Caulfield could have done to achieve a more successful resolution of this complicated developmental period.

3) Holden often refers to people as “phonies.” What would you say he means by this? What types of people does he call “phonies”? Does he act in a phony manner at all? If so, how? Give examples to back up your beliefs.

4) Do a case study on the character of Holden Caulfield. Explain what you believe he is going through or may suffer from by using psychological outside sources. Using theories from psychology, especially those related to mental illness, pretend that you are a psychologist or psychiatrist and use the textual evidence to determine whether Caufield could be diagnosed with a mental illness.

Their Eyes Were Watching God

1) After years of polite submission to her male counterparts, Janie gains her voice in Chapters 7 and 8. Prior to her defiance of Joe, Janie observes the way Daisy, Mrs. Bogle, and Mrs. Robbins are treated by the men. For this essay describe how each woman is treated in the novel.

2) What happens to Janie after “she tore off [her] kerchief... and let down her plentiful hair” (Chapter 8)? How does her hair reflect her womanhood? How does she change when we see her take off the kerchief?

3) Janie finds herself in two marriages with men that greatly differ from each other. These two men go by the names of Joe Starks and Vergile “Tea Cake” Woods. They both have very different impacts on Janie’s path to achieve her life goals. Compare and contrast the two characters.

4) The hurricane makes the characters question who they are and what their place in the universe is. How would you explain this idea?

5) How has Nanny’s experience as a slave stamped her worldview with a strong concern for financial security, respectability, and upward mobility? What is she most concerned about when it comes to Janie?
